A Modern Algebra for Biologists
نویسنده
چکیده
Emphasized throughout this book is the idea that in vitro work has often thrown light upon an in vivo process or has indicated a new direction for in vivo study. It must be noted, however, that an in vitro situation is an artificial environment and care must be used in relating all such findings to the actual host-parasite relationship. In our age of molecular and submolecular microbiology, this book is refreshing. This reviewer is concerned about the number of graduate students who have not indicated any thought of relating their "test tube" studies to the behavior of the microorganism in a host or its natural environment. The book should be required reading for all graduate students in microbiology as well as for some of the faculty.

Crime, Victim and Offender have been focused by many criminologists as builders of criminology’s scientific triangle up to today. Meanwhile, the offender can be considered as the most important side of the triangle. There is no doubt that criminal biologists are leaders of the study of criminal characteristics. Biologists who have accepted the criminal type and believed that the offenders...

eral kinetic systems and compares their properties (after cautioning the reader of the possible pitfalls and of the assumptions which must be made) with various biological phenomena such as regulation, regeneration, determination , gene action, pleiotropism, etc. Few biologists have been as successful as Waddington in accomplishing a synthesis between embryology and genetics. In this volume, he...
متن کاملUses of the Singular Value Decompositions in Biology
The Singular Value Decomposition is a very useful tool deeply rooted in linear algebra. Despite this, SVDs have found their way into many different areas of biology. Biological datasets, often large and noisy, lend themselves to the analysis SVDs offer. While the biological interpretation can be difficult, and the linear algebra can be overwhelming, the utility of the decomposition is making it...
متن کاملAncient DNA from Human and Animal
Research on ancient DNA (aDNA) has the potential to enable molecular biologists and archeologists to decipher certain aspects of history by direct looking into the past. However, several major problems in this field limit the applicability of aDNA studies, most importantly contamination with modern DNA and postmortem DNA degradation. In this study we extracted and analyzed aDNA obtained from ~3...
متن کاملCommutative pseudo BE-algebras
The aim of this paper is to introduce the notion of commutative pseudo BE-algebras and investigate their properties. We generalize some results proved by A. Walendziak for the case of commutative BE-algebras.We prove that the class of commutative pseudo BE-algebras is equivalent to the class of commutative pseudo BCK-algebras. Based on this result, all results holding for commutative pseudo BCK-...
متن کاملA Biologists Guide to Mathematical Modeling in Ecology and Evolution
Thirty years ago, biologists could get by with a rudimentary grasp of mathematics and modeling. Not so today. In seeking to answer fundamental questions about how biological systems function and change over time, the modern biologist is as likely to rely on sophisticated mathematical and computer-based models as traditional fieldwork. In this book, Sarah Otto and Troy Day provide biology studen...
